“IN ADAM”—“IN CHRIST”
John H. Essex

The context of this Scripture under review, “For even as, in Adam, all are dying, thus also, in Christ, shall all be vivified,” is truly remarkable, for it is a section which begins with a profound truth and ends with an even more profound one. Verse 20 of this chapter reads, “Yet now Christ has been roused from among the dead,” and verse 28 concludes with, “that God may be All-in all.” In these two statements we have both the beginning and the consummation of the vivifying process, and in between we have the fact of vivification most clearly proclaimed.

The pre-existence and the kenosis of Christ
A. E. Knoch

The pre-existence of Christ is certain, we know, because He is before all. His self-voiding was effected before His humiliation, and led to His coming into a human likeness. It was only after He was found in fashion as a man that He humbled Himself.

Substitution or inclusion?
A. E. Knoch

God's method of salvation is inclusion, not substitution. Christ does not take the place of each sinner of the race, as though He were a mere man. He displaces Adam, and His work affects all, even as Adams has done. He is the second Man, as though none had intervened between Him and the first. He is the last Adam, in Whom there is a new humanity, which will be blessed by His one sacrifice, even as the old humanity was doomed by Adam's single transgression.

Vivify or make alive

'Vivify' is a term much needed by students of the Scriptures to express a thought which is not clearly apparent in the phrase 'make alive'. Much meditation and investigation have convinced us that it does not merely signify the impartation of life to the dead, but the abolition of the death process altogether. The 'living', that is, mortals who have death operating in them and so are slowly but surely dying, may also be vivified by the impartation of a spirit which will stop the dying process. This is so important that we will consider each passage in which it occurs, so as to see if we cannot confirm this conclusion.

Leaven, Its Biblical usage and interpretation

As to the meaning of the word 'leaven' there seems to be much confusion and inexactness. Probably, few christians would be ready, off-hand, to answer the question: What is leaven?
It will be seen that the correct understanding of this word, is vital to the whole teaching of the Word of God and fundamental to our whole practical life.
